What roofs go through in Littleton

Littleton sits at 5,400 feet on the southwest edge of the Denver metro, where the plains meet the foothills. Roofs here get three things most of the country doesn't: hail every summer, more ultraviolet than almost any city in the lower 48, and wind that comes down off the hogback at 60 to 90 mph a few times each winter.

Hail is the big one. The cells build over the foothills on June and July afternoons and drift east across Ken Caryl, Columbine, Littleton proper and Highlands Ranch before they weaken over the plains. Wind rounds it out. The Chinook events between December and March come over the hogback at 70–90 mph, hit Ken Caryl and Roxborough first, and peel back any shingle whose seal strip has already been cooked loose by the sun. A roof that survives July often loses a slope in January.

Then there's the housing. Most of Littleton and its neighbors — Southpark, Southbridge, Ridgewood, Columbine Knolls, Ken Caryl Ranch, the older half of Highlands Ranch, Willow Creek in Centennial — went up between 1970 and 1999.
